Sets appeal: tennis and physical appearance

Australia's former Federation Cup captain, John Alexander, is appalled by the decision of the All England Club to take the physical appearance of women into consideration when planning their schedule for Centre Court matches at Wimbledon.

"That is an extraordinary thing to do," Alexander told the Herald last night in response to a reported admission by the club that attractiveness was helping determine which players received the privilege of playing on the most famous court in the world.

"It is absolutely and totally inappropriate. We are talking about Wimbledon, the holiest place there is in tennis. It is absolutely absurd and I cannot believe it is the case," he said.

A spokesman from the All England Club, Johnny Perkins, acknowledged "box office appeal" was one of 28 points considered when courts were allocated.

What do you think about the decision to take into account a female player's looks in a tennis game?

Discrimination? How about 'business', based on the preferences of the audience (the people who PAY TO ATTEND, remember them?). The club is merely buttering its bread. Here's a twisted form of equality: Being paid the same amount to play only 3 sets of tennis where men have to play 5 to earn the same? As for male movie stars. Most movie goers are women according to data published. Guess which gender most women would like to see as they watch their fantasy? Yep, men and that generates higher incomes for this 'preferred' group. No conspiracy, no discrimination, it's just business. Me? I also prefer the opposite sex in movies. It is a pity I don't enjoy most chick flicks and if more men attended cinemas, women would he the high earners in that arena. A great pity that women wouldn't pay millions to see me - and yet I somehow manage to live with that 'discrimination', and not make an issue of it (other than as part answer to unsupportable, concocted cries of "discrimination"). The none too subtle implication (women=victim) is pathetic and patently untrue.

I think more attenton should be paid to their dresses than their looks , at any tornament not just wimbledon. Last year I saw a terrible sight of avery large player reaching for a ball , her dress was too skimpy, and diplayed a very large expanse of black knickers as the wind blew.I don,t remember if it was wimbledon but she was playing tennis at abig tornament

It's just sound business practice, nothing more sinister. In the real world attractive people land better paying jobs, marry more successful and higher income producing spouses, and lead more affluent lives. Whether happiness is part of the equation depends on what people value, which is subjective.

I think when you look like Serena Williams you wonder if she has ball,s not very nice to look at on the court

I watch Wimbledon to watch good tennis, that's what it boils down to for me. I don't really mind if it's men or women that I'm watching as long as the tennis is of a high standard. If I spend the hundreds of pounds for the privledge of sitting in Centre Court at Wimbledon I would want an outstanding game of tennis in return, anything less and I would feel ripped off. Lleyton Hewitt played on centre court and from what many females say, he is far from good looking, can someone please explain that to me? In my mind, if you want attractive women in short skirts, hire yourself an escort and ask her to wear a tennis outfit, because that's really the depth of your love of tennis if that's all you want! I want to enjoy tennis as a sport, not as a catwalk. Obviously from the above negative comments there is a lot of jealousy involved, good tennis players are multi-millionnaires and have natural talent, and money and talent always breeds jealousy from those who don't have it and don't want to work to get it!

I'd like to know if the amount of noise they make is one of the 28 factos? I'd be happier to see them banish the ridiculous "grunters" to the back court.

Would much prefer to watch a not so glamorous player than one that grunts and yells all the time

Ability to provide a good match to watch should be the first choice! Who wants to watch a boring match with no rallies just because the players, male or female, are good looking? Usually these matches don't last very long anyway! Give me the top or promising good players on centre court/TV so that I don't waste my time not being entertained anyday!
