About 200 people attended the official opening of the new Yass Community Baptist Church building on Saturday October 24.
Pastor Terry Logan welcomed the crowd to the new site in Laidlaw Street and handed over to Pastor Vuong Nguyen from Hurlstone Park Vietnamese Baptist Church, whom Pastor Terry has worked with previously, to cut the ribbon and unveil the plaque.
Several people from the original 1972 congregation attended, as well as members of every denomination in Yass, members from other Baptist churches in NSW and ACT and many family and friends.
The dedication service was held inside, which included a solo by Pastor Vuong’s wife, Kim Thuy. Pastor Terry gave a message which reminded everyone that we can’t get to heaven by works alone, but that good works were an essential part of showing God’s love to the community. A history of the church was available to everyone attending, with the following mission statement on the cover, “We will be a community of Jesus Christ, a community of care, caring for the community.” The service was followed by an afternoon tea, with lots of homemade goodies.
On Sunday October 25, the first church service was held at 10am, with David Anderson preaching. Services will be held at the new church building at 50 Laidlaw Street at 10am each Sunday.
Yass Community Baptist Church began with a meeting of seven people in 1972. Its first meeting was held at the CWA Hall on Sunday August 27, 1972. The former Methodist Church buildings in Rossi St were purchased and the church moved there in July 1982. Services were moved to Shearsby Crescent when a property was purchased there in 1996. In 2001, a decision was made to move services back into town and they took place at the Seniors’ Hall in the Apex Village until 2005 when the church began using Berinba School’s hall. The block at 50 Laidlaw Street was purchased in May 2006 and the foundations were laid in December 2008.
The Church wishes to thank everyone who gave their time, effort, prayers and donations - large and small - to enable this building project to happen. We are very grateful.
