Crime in Comur Street

10 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
The town's main street was home to four reported cases of malicious damage and theft over the weekend.

Unknown persons attended the disused Commercial Hotel building between 12am and 2.45am on Saturday and again between 2am and 2.20am on Sunday. The perpetrators gained entry into the building on both occasions. Police conducted foot patrols through the building and canvassed the area but no one was able to assist in narrowing down the time of the offences or the possible offenders.

Unknown offenders forced front door of a retail business in Comur Street open between 2am and 2.25am on Sunday. Police patrolling the area came across the offence. They were unable to contact the key holder so secured the building the best they could. Police returned to the premises at 4.30am to find the door had been pushed open again. Attempts to contact the owner were again unsuccessful. It appears as if some items inside the store had been disturbed and inquiries are continuing.

Unknown persons attended a Laidlaw Street retail site between 8pm on Friday and 10am on Saturday and forced open a door there. An office area of the building was searched and a small of amount of cash removed. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Yass Police Station.

Unknown suspects forced open the door of a Comur Street real estate agency between 2am and 2.30am on Sunday. Owners of the business were contacted and attended to secure the premises. It appears as if nothing was missing or stolen. Anyone with information should contact local police.

It is past time to start using CCTV cameras. We have a straight stretch of road here and CCTV cameras should be very efficient in both deterring villains and identifying them if they do persist in vandalising properties. Why have CCTV cameras not yet been installed - they have to be cheaper in the long run than the cost of resources and claims for damages. Some folk will initially be wary of cameras being installed (privacy and all that) but please, folks, consider that if you have nothing to hide or be ashamed of then they are not going to be a threat to you and, conversly, will be a help in preventing crime.
