Farmers markets re-shuffle

08 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
The recent resignation of manager Bernie Howe has seen a major re-shuffle in the organisation of the Rotary Club’s farmers markets.

Rotary Club president Judy Ford, along with former president Kim Turner, will now co-coordinate the bi-monthly markets.

Rotary have big plans for the markets with the main goal to expand and become more accepting of various goods.

“We really want to open the markets up a bit,” Mrs Ford told the Tribune.

“We want a range of quality goods but we also want to make sure that people don’t see us as just a flea market. We don’t really want secondhand material or anything like that.”

Mrs Ford is extremely grateful for the work done by Mr Howe in his tenure as coordinator, but believes having two people looking after it will definitely benefit the markets.

“Bernie has been wonderful and he did a fantastic job, but he has a business venture to pursue so Kim and I have taken it on.

“Having two people look after it will, I believe, help the markets a lot. It should be great.”

It is hoped the number of vendors will double under the new management and the increased leniency of accepted goods.

The farmers’ markets will continue to take place on the first and third Saturday of every month at the Yass showgrounds.

Wrong location and extortionate stall charges mean that it will continue to fail. What a wasted opportunity by Rotary who won't listen to the public and continue to allow a monopoly of one farmer at the "Farmers Market".

Thanks for the comment. We most definitely listen to the public and we are considering lowering the stall charges. Changing the location is not so easy as there are a number of factors to be taken into consideration such as access to power, parking, a place to store equipment, under roof cover, costs. However, any suggestions are most welcome.

Judy - what about the monopoly given to one Rotary member to sell fruit and veg ? How can you justify that ?

As a new resident, I went along to the markets one day last year. The general atmosphere was very subdued and there wasn't much on offer, nor much variety. There wasn't really anything that would make me go back a second time.

We certainly plan to open up to competition and provided the goods are of a high standard we will allow them to be sold. We appreciate that on some days there are less vendors than other days but our plan is to make this market worth visiting every time. Please don't write us off just yet. EPIC markets started with only a few stalls! It takes time to build a market.
