In high school Hannah Burn-Petersen dreamed of becoming a chef. By year nine she decided she wanted to be a vet.
As teenagers often do, she changed her mind…. again. Upon completing her school certificate, Hannah was set on following in her grandfather’s footsteps. She was going to become a doctor.
A lot has changed since then. Today, Hannah is on the verge of completing her final medical placement and is only weeks away from graduating after five years of university.
And what better way to complete her degree than working under the guidance of experienced GP and grandfather, Dr Ray Burn?
Hannah, who hails from Sydney, has fallen in love with Yass since starting her placement at Old Linton Medical Practice. Outside of work hours, she enjoys hitting the gym with her aunty and personal trainer, Ruth.
It’s all falling into place.
“Placement here has been fabulous,” she said. “The patients here are really good. They are understanding and they’re willing to help you learn.”
A career as a General Practitioner is an appealing one in the eyes of Hannah. “I’ve enjoyed the variety working in Yass has offered. I’m treating anyone from babies to elderly folk… people of all walks of life, presenting with all sorts of symptoms. It keeps you on your toes,” she said.
Hannah made it clear she one day intends to run the practice. But first she will graduate from Newcastle University and spend two years as a medical intern at Wollongong Hospital, something she is looking forward to.
“You certainly don’t get bored in this job,” Hannah explained. “You get some really good patient interaction. I’ve also had the opportunity to deal with some really fine doctors who can work in the face of adversity and still keep a sense of humour and their head screwed on,” she said.
Hannah will complete her placement in Yass today. No doubt we will see her again in the future.
