This week, Jack will be getting an insight into the field of dentistry at R.G. Woods Dental Surgery. When Jack got braces four years ago, this sparked an interest in the dental profession. Since then, Jack has been doing some research to find out what it takes to become a dentist. When work experience came around, a place at the local dental surgery was the obvious choice for Jack.
This week, Jack has been learning all about the different tasks dentists undertake. Jack has learned how to perform root canal therapy, scale and clean patients teeth, how to perform restorations and learned about dental hygiene. Jack has also learned about the various equipment used by dentists.
Jack is very grateful to the dentists at the surgery, who have all been very helpful and told him about possible career paths in dentistry, and what to do after he has completed Year 12, in order to become a dentist.
Jack is looking forward to work experience next week at the Yass Vets.
(Luke Perry)
Another Mount Carmel student undertaking work experience this week is Luke Perry, who is getting an insight into the hardware industry at F.A.W.
The idea of doing work experience at a hardware shop was appealing to Luke, who enjoys woodwork both at school and as a hobby. Working at F.A.W. has been a valuable experience for Luke and he has enjoyed learning about what is involved in running the business. Luke has also learned about the variety of jobs out there.
Although Luke enjoys his wood work, and has liked working at F.A.W., his real passion is for animals. Luke has wanted to work with animals ever since seeing Steve Irwin on television. Next year, Luke hopes to attend TAFE and do a course in animal studies which will enable him to consider a variety of careers to do with animals, such as a zoologist or a vet.
Next week for work experience, Luke will have another enjoyable week at the Yass Library.
(Bridget Angove)
Bridget Angove is another student having a great week of work experience at the Yass Information Centre.
The Information Centre was an excellent place for Bridget to do her work experience, as she is interested in tourism and travelling. The Information Centre is a place where Bridget can focus on these interests and learn more about Yass.
Bridget finds the Information Centre interesting, and the staff have been very helpful.
The highlight of Bridget’s time at the Information Centre has been a visit to the archives, where Bridget is now a volunteer. She found the archives fascinating; she has loved finding more about the history of Yass.
After completing Year 12, Bridget hopes to go to University and have a career involving history or geography, her favourite school subjects.
Bridget’s interest in history started this year, while studying the Vietnam War at school and visiting the Australian War Memorial. Bridget hopes to learn more about history next week when her work experience will take place at the War Memorial.
(Matthew Ryan)
Matthew Ryan is another Mount Carmel student having an enjoyable time at work experience. For the next two weeks, Matthew will be helping with the maintenance at Mount Carmel School.
Matthew was drawn to the idea of doing work experience as part of the maintenance team at Mount Carmel because he felt it would be an enjoyable experience and he has liked learning about the various pieces of equipment and how to use them properly. Matthew has really enjoyed learning about what is involved in maintenance in an easy-going, calm atmosphere.
In the future, Matthew aspires to become an electrician. He hopes to gain an apprenticeship in the near future in this area. Matthew was attracted to the idea of becoming an electrician because he feels it would be an enjoyable career and the salary of an electrician is also an appeal.
Matthew is looking forward to another enjoyable week as part of the Mount Carmel maintenance team next week.

Jennifer Perry has also been doing work experience this week. Jennifer has been having a great time learning about the workplace at Abbey Footwear.
Jennifer decided to do work experience at Abbey Footwear because of her interest in fashion. She is having fun learning about the retail industry and learning skills like stock take and customer service in a relaxed environment.
Jennifer has always been interested in fashion, and about two years ago, she decided to turn her interest into a career.
Jennifer plans to move to Melbourne in the future, the fashion capital of Australia, where she aims to start a career in the fashion industry. One day, Jennifer hopes to have a position in a high profile fashion company.
So far, work experience has helped Jennifer learn about the running of a business and given her a better understanding of the fashion industry. Jennifer will continue to learn more about fashion when she starts her second week of work experience at Petite and Belle.
