A group of firefighters from NSW Fire and Rescue rode their push bikes into Yass on Wednesday and taught some local children about the dangers of fire.
The ‘400 in 4’ charity bike ride team were on their way from Sydney to Wagga, raising money for the burns unit at Sydney Children’s Hospital, when they took a break in Yass.
The ride has raised over $150,000 in the past for the Westmead Hospital, which primarily goes towards increased pain management for children who suffer agonising injuries. This year they intend to raise around $50,000 for the cause.
Firefighter Stanley set up a fire safety demonstration at Berinba primary school, a display of what not to do in the event of a kitchen fat fire.
Flames rose metres into the air when water was poured onto the oil fire. The Berinba students were well informed on what to do in the event of a fire and all knew the relevant catch phrases.
“Often when there’s a fire you should follow what the kids are doing, they don’t have a million things racing through their head - they know to get down low and go,” one firefighter said.
The riders then stayed the night in Yass, rising early to have breakfast at 6am at McDonalds, where they held a fundraising drive.
After their breakfast the riders were heading to Gundagai where they would put on their safety demonstration for schools in the area. The ride finishes in Wagga in time for the state-wide Fire and Rescue NSW open day.
“The charity ride is taking place during Fire Prevention Week which culminates with stations open day on Saturday when members of the public are invited to visit their local station,” fire fighter and charity rider Scott Hanley said.
The Yass town brigade will be holding its open day this Saturday from 10am to 2pm and families are encouraged to visit their local fire station, meet the firefighters and learn more about fire safety.
