An 85km bike ride wasn’t enough to stop 24 firies from teaching kids at Mt Carmel School about fire safety and raising money for the Burns Unit at the Westmead Children’s Hospital during a visit to Yass on Wednesday.
The NSW Fire Brigade’s ‘400 in 4’ Charity Ride passed through the town on the second day of its four day trek from Campbelltown to Wagga Wagga.
The 400km bicycle journey is held each year with the aim to raise in excess of $50,000 for the Burns Unit.
Soon after a fire-truck-escorted arrival in Yass, the crew split up into two groups. One strolled up and down Comur Street to raise money for the cause, the other stopped by the Dutton Street Catholic School to speak to pupils about what to do in a fire emergency.
Fire-fighter Scott Hanley excited the kids during a demonstration of what not to do if a flame breaks out on a stovetop.
“I’m just going to go and see how my chips are going,” Hanley told the assembly before discovering his pot with cooking oils and ‘chips’ was alight. He poured water on the stove. An instant reaction between the water, flame and cooking oils created an almighty gust of fire.
The kids were astonished, many laughing uncontrollably, some dumbfounded, others scared. The fire-fighter's message hit home.
The crew stayed in town on Wednesday night and stopped by McDonald's Yass on Thursday morning to raise money.
