David has a Field Day

The Yass Soldiers Club Snipers have moved into second position on the Triggs Shield competition table with a crushing 158-run win over Murrumbateman at Victoria Park on Saturday.

Batting first the Snipers compiled an imposing 4/259, thanks mainly to a stunning 100 not out by stand-in skipper David Field.

The Yass Representative captain brought up his ton off the second last ball of the innings. Opener Jamie Weston made an impressive 51, while Aaron Goode made a fine 42 and Danny Battye an unbeaten 27.

Andrew McLean finished with two wickets but went at more than six runs an over. McLean took 2-52 off his nine overs, while Mitch Johnson, 1-32 off five, was the only Maulers’ bowler to get among the wickets.

The Maulers were never in the hunt. After stumbling to 3-30, Murrumbateman was bowled out for a disappointing 101. Barry Collins top scored with 28. For the second week in a row, off-spinner Danny Battye excelled with the ball. Backing up from a six-wicket haul against the Bulls, Battye finished with 5-21 from five overs to send the Maulers packing.

Chris Bradley picked up two wickets, Anthony Carroll was economical in his seven over spell and finished with the solitary wicket, while Field capped a brilliant all-round performance with figures of 2-10 off 5.2.

The win elevates the Snipers into second position on the table, one win behind the undefeated Golf Club Piranhas. The Snipers will enjoy a week off and will relish the opportunity to pick up maximum points with the bye.

Murrumbateman will desperate to break their season duck when they host the winless Dalton Dingoes at Victoria Park on Saturday.

Dalton collapse as Bulls snage win

The Dalton Dingoes looked set to record an upset win over the Aussie Bulls at the Dingo Den on Saturday. That was until they lost their last five wickets for 14 runs as the Bulls stormed home to record a 47-run win to move into a share of second place.

Batting first, the Bulls got off to a reasonable start and ticked the score along to 3-83 after 20 overs. Three wickets in three overs saw them collapse to 6-88 as the Dingoes jumped into the hot seat.

Number seven Ben Cole came to the rescue with a mighty 71 not out, his second half century in consecutive innings. Cole batted masterfully with the tail and put together a crucial 68-run partnership with lower order batsman Andrew Holgate.

By the innings’ end, the Bulls had compiled a healthy 183 from 40.3 overs. The Apps brothers, Jamie and Christian, both finished with two wickets as did Gary Offley.

Buoyed by their strong finish, the Bulls came out firing in the field. Opening bowlers Andrew Holgate and Graeme Banks put the visitors well on top.

Dalton slipped to the precarious position of 4-38. That was before Jacko O’Brien and Christian Apps steadied the ship with a stand of 40.

Luckily for the Bulls, Apps went without adding to his total after drinks and the visitors looked set to record a comfortable win. But as had been the case for most of the match, momentum again swung.

O’Brien and skipper Michael Poidevin put ticked the score along to 123, putting the Dingoes back in the box seat.

Enter Alex Waters… After copping some fierce treatment in his first two overs, Waters bounced back with two wickets in four very economical overs. Andrew Holgate, who hit the deck hard with the pill, took an awkward yet stunning catch in the outfield to dismiss the dangerous O’Brien for 48.

In sync with Allan Neill, Waters proceeded to bundle Dalton out for 137 with ten full overs remaining.

Best of the bowlers for the Bulls was opener Graeme Banks, 2-23 off seven overs, Alex Waters, 2-26 off six and Andrew Holgate, 1-29 off nine.

Aussie Bulls spring to the top

The Aussie Bulls have moved to the top of the Sweeney Cup table after a convincing 25-run at O’Connor Park on Saturday.

The Bulls prevailed in a low scoring affair, thanks to a calm 32 by Matt Rhodes and a four wicket haul to opener Josh Paton.

Batting first, the Bulls struggled to sustain a partnership, losing wickets at regular interviews before succumbing for 114. The aforementioned Rhodes top scored and received support from Mark Garland, 22, and Jason McDonald, 14.

Scott Harding was the pick of the bowlers for the Gunners, finishing with figures of 4-23. Chris Connors caused a few problems and finished with 2-24.

In reply, the Gunners collapsed to 8-36, thanks to blistering opening spells by captain Joseph Logue, 3-18 off eight overs, and Josh Paton, 4-15 off eight.

Some late resistance by Jeremy Clarke, 48 not out, and Ian Clarke, 11, gave Gundaroo a chance of pulling off a come-from-behind win. The pair put on 45 before Ian was dismissed.

Shaun Davis bowled well and finished the match with two wickets, while spinner Mark Garland managed one.

The win elevates the Bulls into first position with three wins from as many matches.

In the second Sweeney Cup fixture on Saturday, Murrumbateman opened their season account with a hairy four wicket win over Bookham-Bowning.

Batting first, Bookham-Bowning looked set to post a healthy total when openers John Davis and David Hazel for an opening stand of 36. But when Davis fell for 13, the home side lost its next nine wickets for 54 runs. David Hazell top scored with 33, while Anthony Kennedy made 14.

Anthony Lustenburger was the destroyer for the Maulers taking 6-18 from his full quota of overs.

In reply, Murrumbateman stumbled to 6-71 with Anthony Kennedy picking up four wickets. Mitch Quinn, 30 not out, and Trent Darmody, 21 not out steadied the ship and guided the Maulers home.

This weekend the Golf Club Taipans take on the Aussie Bulls at Bowning while Murrumbateman host Gundaroo at the Recreation Ground.
