The Yass Golf Club Piranhas have consolidated their position at the top of the Triggs Shield competition table with a powerful 92 run win over the Aussie Bulls on Saturday.
Batting first at O’Connor Park, the undefeated Piranhas dominated a weakened Bulls’ bowling line-up, posting a massive 3/229 from their 45 overs with relative ease.
Luke Maher tore the Bulls to pieces with a hard hitting 92. Maher was dismissed caught and bowled by Allan Neill in the nervous nineties and blew his chance to become the fourth A grade cricketer to post a century this season.
Adrian Waters helped lay the platform for the Piranhas with 39 and shared an 86-run opening stand with Maher.
In-form batsman Matt Lawrence was again the thick of the action, posting a half century, while representative batsman Daniel Poidevin finished unbeaten on 29.
Allan Neill, 2-57 off eight overs, Andrew Swaffield, 1-43 from nine, were the only Bulls’ bowlers to grab wickets.
For the second week running, Graeme Banks was the pick of the Bulls’ bowlers. Banks bent his back and finished with economical figures of 0-19 from eight overs.
The wheels fell off early in the Bulls’ run chase. Opening batsman Grant Rayner fell for 3, not long before skipper Hamish Scroope came and went for 1.
When Allan Neill was dismissed for 9, the Bulls slipped to 3-25 and any faint hopes of victory had diminished.
AJ O’Mara, 25, Andrew Swaffield 29, and Matt Rhodes, 21, show middle order resistance but it wasn’t enough to get the Bulls back in the match.
Tom Pinson continued his outstanding form with the pill in A grade. Pinson finished with 1-18 off his seven overs. As per usual, Callan Kemp was on the money and was rewarded with two wickets at better than two runs an over.
Daniel Poidevin was again the chief destroyer, bagging three wickets, while Robert Field snared one and Matt Lawrence two.
In the second A grade fixture on Saturday, the Murrumbateman Maulers scored their first win of the season, toppling the hapless Dalton Dingoes by eight wickets at Bookham.
Batting first, Dalton made a reasonable fist of the conditions and scored a defendable 208. Opening batsman Jamie Apps got the innings off to a flyer 42, before sister Corina provided the anchor with a patient 39.
Some later order heavy hitting from Peter Dowling, 48 not out, pushed the Dingoes’ score past the 200 mark.
Wickets were fairly well shared around for the Murrumbateman mob. Barry Collins finished with 3-45, Jackson Rowe 2-29, Aaron Donnelly 1-20 and Leigh French 2-29, albeit off three overs.
The Maulers had little trouble picking off the required runs. Leigh French, 69 not out, and Jackson Rowe, 59 not out, steered Murrumbateman to an eight wicket win.
Josh O’Brien and Michael Poidevin each picked up one wicket for Dalton.
After four competition rounds, the undefeated Piranhas stand alone the top, closely followed the Soldiers Club Snipers, the Aussie Bulls in third, Murrumbateman in fourth and Dalton bringing up the rear.
On Saturday Murrumbateman host the Piranhas, while Dalton is scheduled to meet the Snipers at Victoria Park.
