A hard-hitting 73 off just 45 deliveries from opening bat Daniel Poidevin has put the Golf Club Piranhas in the box seat to win this season’s Robert Glover Memorial Twenty20 trophy.
After enjoying an opening round rest due to a Murrumbateman Maulers’ forfeit, the Piranhas went to town, belting the Aussie Bulls’ attack all around the park in setting up a commanding 6/159 at Victoria Park on Saturday.
Poidevin and representative batsman Adrian Waters shared a 102 run second wicket stand. Waters was dismissed in the 13th over for 42 from 34 deliveries, sparking a mini-collapse.
Poidevin followed Waters soon after as the Bulls reeled the Piranhas in during the latter overs.
Spinner Andrew Swaffield was the best of the Bulls’ bowlers, finishing with 1-22 from three overs. Shaun Davis picked up two wickets, while AJ O’Mara bagged one, as did Adam Waters and younger brother Alex.
The Aussie’s hopes for pulling off the run chase were dealt a nasty blow when opening batsman Andrew Swaffield was sent packing in the third over.
Two wickets fell in the ensuing overs and the Bulls were staring down the barrel at an embarrassing total.
In-form batsman Allan Neill came to the rescue with a fast 69 not out, taking the Bulls total to a respectable 6/121.
David Brown was the best with the pill, taking 2-14 off three overs, while Rom Pinson, Brad Wilson and Josh O’Brien each managed one.
Earlier in the day the Aussie Bulls, who were required to play two games, took care of an under-strength Snipers.
Batting first, the Bulls managed to scrounge together a credible 7-117 from their 20 overs. Allan Neill top scored with 55, the first of his two half centuries for the afternoon.
Shaun Davis added some punch to the team’s total with a fast and unbeaten 17 in the dying overs.
Danny Battye was the pick of the bowlers for the Snipers, finishing with figures of 2-16 from three overs.
The Snipers’ chase began in a healthy fashion with opening batsman Chris Bradley and Anthony Merritt combing for a run ball stand of 31.
Their innings fell away somewhat when Bradley departed for 15. Merritt, 23, top scored and received strong support from David Field, 21.
Tight bowling and pressure in the field from the Bulls played a pivotal role in restricting the Snipers to 5-97 at the end of their 20 overs.
Ryan Betts was by far the best bowler, taking 2-9 from three overs. Al Waters impressed, finishing with 1-15 from his four overs.
After the opening round of the A grade twenty20 competition, the Piranhas sit alone the top, followed by the Bulls, Snipers, Dalton and Murrumbateman.
In the second grade twenty20 format on Saturday, the Aussie Bulls held off a spirited Golf Club Taipans by four runs at O’Connor Park, while at Gundaroo Murrumbateman outfoxed their hosts by five wickets.
The Maulers sit at the top of the B grade competition, closely followed by the Bulls, Bookham/Bowning, the Taipans and Gundaroo.
