BBQ aroma for Wal Smith Twilight Bowls

20 Nov, 2009 03:00 AM
With a bowl in one hand, a cold beverage in the other, and the aroma of a sizzling barbecue filling the warm twilight air, the Yass Valley community came together on Tuesday evening to battle out round three of the Wal Smith Memorial Twilight Bowls Competition.

Those who choose not to muddy themselves on the field of battle (read "onlookers") witnessed some interesting match ups, unorthodox bowling methods, and lots of new chums of all age groups enjoying the time honoured sport.

Ross, Helen McCarthy and Greg Prior (15.5) tied with "The Goodies" (15.5) for the title of round three’s best performed.

The Goodies overcame the exuberance and flair of Craig Pollack's "Young Guns" on rink two, while next door on the "TV Rink" Greg Prior's chargers came back from an early deficit against the tenacious efforts of Michelle Anderson's team to claim the chocolates. The win also positions Ross, Helen and Greg in first place for the competition, overtaking last week’s leaders "Team Mather" who are now in second position.

With a great family atmosphere and a barbecue for participants and spectators, Tuesday nights at The Bowlo is where the local community comes together!

Sunday saw a large crowd gathered in Adele Street to witness the popular Annual Acclimatisation Society Bowls Day.

What is the Acclimatisation Society, and what business do they have playing bowls on Adele Street, I hear you ask?

They are not, as you may be thinking, a secret organisation, they are in fact an important local volunteer group that helps stock our waterways (Burrunjuck Dam, Yass River, etc) with native fish species (Yellow Belly, Cod, Bream, etc).

The Annual Bowls Day, hosted by the Yass Bowling Club, is an important fundraiser for The Society, and helps them to continue their vital community service into the future.

Two hard fought games of bowls were played with a delicious barbecue lunch midway through, to decide the Acclimatisation Society Bowls Champions for 2009.

In a very tight finish, only half a point separated the winners S Howarth, J Jones, Rob Corcoran from runners-up D Wilson, H McCarthy and B Schutz.

Third place honours were won by club stalwarts M Jones, K Baker and P Jones.

Congratulations to Rob Pollack (Acclimatisation Society) on another successful, well run event!
