Pennant season kicked off last Sunday with the ones and sixes bringing home the goods. The fives stuttered at Weston Creek but there are nine rounds to go.
The ones took on North Canberra, coming home with two rinks to one and an aggregate win 66-52.
Dave Thomas skipped Peter Fahey, Ted Maher and Danial Wilson to a 27-13 win and Mick Penyu headed Glen Snowden, Simon Cassidy and Daniel Thomas to a 23-18 victory.
Breeze Howard, Brad Thomas, Jamie Bush and Jason Dukes went down 16-21 but it was a good first round hit out. Next week they are at home to Weston Creek.
The sixes came from the dead when Dessie Bush conjured pure bushman magic on the last end to get the team home two rinks to one, with an aggregate 63-61 win.
The fives had trouble handling the conditions at Weston Creek, going down by two rinks. The aggregate read a 19 difference 66-47.
Barry Bush, Greg Pryor, Rob Corcoran and John Bruce grabbed three shots on the last end to tie 21 apiece and at least open the account for the fives.
David Grear, Rodney Wilson, Garry Brooker and Beau Dunley, who were down 11 shots, got it back to four but dropped four on the last two ends to lose 20-12. Phil Murphy, Geoff Darmody and Darryl Gold were in a happy place but were run down 25-14 adding up to an aggregate loss of 47-66. Redemption time next week at home against Canberra City.
Two teams tried their luck in the ACT state fours and Dave Thomas, Brad Thomas, Mick Penyu and Jamie Bush won two from two and moved through to the third round on Saturday March 4.
Breeze Howard, Peter Fahey, Phil Murphy and Danial Wilson were rolled in the second round by the Wick brothers playing out of City.
Novice singles crown was decided in the past week and Geoff Walker reigned supreme over Alex Goode. At 12-10 after 21 ends, the crowd was in for a tight long game but the bowling gods intervened, with Geoff picking up 13 shots in five ends to claim victory 25-10. On their way to a finals berth Geoff took on Ashley Goode and, in a see-sawing battle, the ‘Phantom’ grabbed a two and pipped Ashley at the post 25-24. Alex took on favourite Beau Dunley and led all the way to win 25-19.
Two triples and two pair’s games were played on Wednesday, with David Cassidy and Geoff Walker taking overall honours on the day, winning 30-7. Clarrie Roach and D Hoare missed out by half a shot on winning the day after posting a 27-12 victory.
Jack Wales, Keith Kemp and James Ward cruised to a comfortable win posting a 25-12 score line. Eric ‘the mugger’ Smith, Peter Horton and Kevin Baker took the foot off the pedal finally winning 20-16 after leading 19-6 on end 14.
Major and minor pairs nominations are being called for, with nominations closing Saturday February 18. First round commences February 25, with the second round on March 4 and the third on March 18.
