The Greypies legend lives on

The Yass Greypies did the town proud in their first appearance at a rugby league masters tournament last weekend at Young.

The over 35-year-old Greypies had no idea what to expect heading into their first game against the Bega Old Cocks and a few were visibly nervous. For some, it was over 20 years since they had graced a football field

The Bega side was captained by former Tiger and Raider Lloyd Martin and the game was a pretty entertaining affair. With a five metre rule in place, nobody could really get a head of steam up but the tackling was still solid.

The game was played in a good spirit with both sides willing to throw the ball around. Yass prevailed four tries to nil with Chris Davis, Spider Smith, Bird Warner and Eddie Wylie crossing the try-line.

The second game against the Wagga Shamrocks was very much a different affair. Three ex-NRL Players in Craig Field (Rabbitohs), Steve Reardon (Bulldogs) and John Fifita (Saints) were in the Wagga team and the boys were playing to win. On the other hand, Yass had the Bullman brothers, Ian, Wayne and Glen, so it was pretty even on paper.

Seriously though, Field’s inclusion caused quite a few raised eyebrows. The rules state that you are to be retired to be able to play yet Field represented Group 9 earlier in the season. A few suspect tackles crept into the match itself and some of the Shamrock’s tactics were not really in the spirit of what the tournament was about.

The Greypies defence was pretty impressive so Field constantly kicked the ball over the top which led to three first half tries for Wagga. Yass’s attitude really was that if you kick it, you chase it. In the second half the Magpies really muscled up and fought back to within one try thanks to four-pointers to Adam Danilczak and Greg Perceval.

Field then stepped up another gear, getting in between Yass defenders Sean Besgrove (who has never been blessed with a great turn of speed) and Peter Townsend (who was playing on one leg) for another Wagga try.

I bet Field will remember the day he sliced between the two Yass legends and tell his grandkids about it.

In the end, the Greypies went down six tries to three but were justifiably proud of their efforts. A couple of recent retirees remarked that it was as tough as any reserve grade game they had played.

The boys woke up pretty sore all over on the Sunday. Even the Greypies’ water boy Matthew ‘Marble’ Allen suffered from cramp.

The game however, against the Goulburn Old Dogs, was played in the manner you would expect of two tired and hungover sides. It was more a game of touch but it did have its moments.

The Goulburn water boy found himself in the thick of the action when he was passed the ball and took a hit it up. He even managed to pull off the tackle of the game when he launched himself at Adam Danilczak and brought him down around the bootlaces much to the amusement of Adam’s team mates.

It was a great weekend with all 18 players getting along together and rekindling some past glory days. Many of them had not played together but for others, it was like stepping back in time.

I have no doubt the Greypies will be back in 2010 with virtually all the players stating that they will definitely be running around again.

This scribe has a few awards to give out to players after the weekend:

Greypies Player of the Tournament – Charlie Merritt

Charlie was the popular pick by his fellow players (and also because he volunteered to drive the bus home). Close runners-up were Paul Bush, who went pretty well on Saturday and Buck Rayner for taking the field at 55 years of age and still tackling around the bootlaces.

Best Tackle – Anthony ‘Tugboat’ Vitler

Anthony’s effort takes the cake. When cleaned up a Wagga player, the whole crowd moaned on impact and a Wagga team mate commented to his fallen comrade: ‘that must have hurt’.

Best Tackle on a Greypie – Goulburn Water Boy

The Goulburn Water Boy bringing down Adam Danilczak was without doubt the best tackle laid on one of the Yass locals.

Best Non-Tackle – Glen ‘Finger’ Bullman

Finger takes out this award by quite a margin. The effort was there but stud marks beginning at the ankles and ending at the forehead tell the real story.

Best Kick – Spider Smith

Spider was told to kick the ball out on the full against Wagga. What did he do? He kicked it to the Fui Fui look alike (see best non tackle for what happened next).

Best Kick in General Play – Michael Owen

The Russian takes the award for kicking the ball on the first tackle after the Greypies had been defending for a lengthy period of time.

Best Entrance into a Game – Terry ‘Buck’ Rayner

Buck copped one across the chops 20 seconds after taking the field after 25 plus years in retirement.

Best Call – Sean Besgrove

Bezzy wins hands-down with: “I’ve got him, I’ve got him……no I haven’t” as Craig Field beat him on the outside.

The Courage Award – Greg Perceval

Greg, who after getting belted over the sideline in a late tackle against, Wagga got up and pushed the defender, calling him an idiot. It was soon discovered that this particular Wagga player was twice the size of Greg. Now that’s courage!

Coolness Award – David Grear

Is David Grear cool or what? So cool he forget to take his sunglasses as he took the field for two of the games.

Best Impression – Joel Blyss

Blyssy showed his father Michael what he looked like when he made a break only to slip over (exactly like Michael did).
