'Bill' comes to town

02 Sep, 2011 04:00 AM
On Monday afternoon the greatest prize in world rugby came to Yass; the William Webb Ellis trophy (Bill) was unveiled to a large group of enthusiastic rugby fans at Victoria Oval.

The cup was accompanied by Brumbies players Matt Toomua and Jerry Yanuyanutawa. After a line up of individual photos for each of the kids, and some adults, the cup was proudly displayed for all to see.

The kids enjoyed an afternoon of coaching by the talented Brumbies as the parents watched on.

It really was a special event and highlighted the excitement of the forthcoming Rugby World Cup being held in New Zealand. The Yass Junior Rugby Union Club would like to thank the Brumbies’ Russell Ingram, Sam Rolfe and Matt and Jerry for their time and enthusiasm in celebrating this special occasion. Go the Wallabies.

Junior Rams finals

Under 9s

The Yass Langtree Information Management under 9 Rams came away with a great win on Saturday, overpowering Woden Royals 25-20 at Nicholls Oval. The Yass Rams played as a team with all aspects of their game coming together.

The match was intense and the scoreboard read 10-10 at half-time. The Yass Rams dominated in the second half in both defence and attack, with tries to Connor Bush and Jack Callaghan.

Strong defence was the order of the day and brought the boys home for a win and a place into the grand final match. The final score was Yass 25, Woden Royals 20. The players’ player was Jack Callaghan.

Good luck next Sunday!

Under 10s

The Rams under 10s were narrowly defeated 15-12 at the weekend after a close contest with the Broulee Dolphins.

Broulee dominated possession early and the Rams did well to hold on thanks to strong defensive tackling by Harry Silversides and Charlie Polyak. But the Dolphins finally slipped through for their first try after 15 minutes.

Broulee scored again not long after but the Rams replied through an explosive run by George Clark, which made the score 10-7 to Broulee at half-time.

In the second half, Broulee crossed first and increased the score to 15-7 but again the Rams bounced back as George made another break and scored, to take the score to 15-12.

With five minutes to go, and close to the Rams line, Maddi Watt stripped the ball and offloaded to George who sprinted three quarters of the length of the field, only to have the try disallowed through a contentious decision in not grounding the ball properly. With the siren sounding the Broulee Dolphins defeated the valiant Rams 15-12.
