Clay Target news

18 Dec, 2009 03:00 AM
The club’s November 15 shoot was contested in very hot conditions and as such competitor numbers were down slightly with 26 in attendance. Despite the low numbers, returned scores were high.

The first event was a 20 target double barrel cash divide. A cash divide competition means there are no shoot offs between the winners, rather the pool of money allotted gets divided between the top scores for each grade.

Jason Winters, Matt Harris, Darryl Reed, David Claxton and Ian McKenzie took out the cash in AA grade with a perfect 20.

John Allen, Dennis Smith, Noel Watchorn and Giulio Serafin won the A grade loot with 20 out of 20.

George Kazolis won B grade with a dead-eye score of 20, closely followed by Geoff Mason with 19.

Frank Bartolo won C grade with 20 from John Nyveld on 19.

The second event held on the day was the club’s annual Memorial Trophy, named in honour of one of the organisation’s main original members, Ray Smith.

Shooters took part in a double rise event – a favourite of Ray’s. Instead of competitors trying to shoot one target, they’re required to hit two at once.

Mat Patmore now has his name on the shield for 2009 after shooting 28 out of 30.

Dave Wakem finished first in AA grade with 26, marginally ahead of Jason Winters with 25.

Mat Harris took home the A grade honours with 25, ahead of Chris Milligan on 24.

Kate Schiller proved too strong for the men in B grade with 27 from 30 while George Kaolis sewed up second place with 22.

Scott Burrows won C grade with 21 ahead of Lee Burchell with 19.

The prizes were all presented by Ray Smith’s son, Dennis Smith, who continues the family tradition and usually features in the winning circle himself. Thanks Dennis.

The third event of the day was the club’s 50 target single barrel championship. This sash was kindly donated by one of the club’s long standing sponsors in Ian and Vicki Robertson from Yass Landscape Supplies. A big thank you goes out to Ian and Vickie. Your support is always appreciated.

The single barrel format speaks for itself: only one shell to hit the target. There’s no second chance!

The overall winner was Dave Wakem from Tumut after a shoot off with two others. Noel Watchorn received single barrel his ‘50’ break badge. These badges take a long while to obtain for most of us and some never so they are proudly worn.

The aforementioned Dave Wake proved too strong with 48, taking the honours after a shootout with Ian McKenzie and Noel Watchorn.

Ian McKenize took some consolation however, winning the A grade divison from Mat Patmore on 47.

Noel Watchorn won B grade with 48 while Matt Schiller grabbed second position with 46.

Frank Bartolo was crowned B grade champ with 46 ahead of Steve Schiller with 44.

Les Burchell won C grade with 42 from John Nyveld with 37.

Mat Patmore was announced the day’s best shooter. Mat was named Overall Gun after shooting 94 out of a possible 100 targets.

This Sunday December 20 will see the President, Paul Watchorn, putting up a trophy for people to come along and win. You will have to be the best at shooting 50 pointscore targets!
