12 Mar 10 | Good news about the "miracle" Asian elephant calf, who was born alive on Wednesday after Taronga Zoo vets believed he had died during his mother's week-long labour.
05 Mar 10 | The health reforms announced by Kevin Rudd are ambitious, and herald major changes. Whether those changes are good or bad remains to be seen.
12 Feb 10 | This week I have had the very difficult job of sifting through all the lovely entries in our summer fiction competition and selecting our prize winners.
27 Jan 10 | Millions of Australians from as far west as Shark Point and east as Byron Bay celebrated yesterday.
Many rose early to attend community breakfasts, plenty took pleasure in a rare mid-week sleep-in, others continued to enjoy an extended weekend after chucking a ‘sickie’ on Monday and no doubt a few woke with a dry mouth and throbbing head after guzzling down one too many ales.
22 Jan 10 | During the week I had a phone call at the Trib that went something like this:
Caller: “Hello Robyn. It’s Phoebe calling from the National Australia Bank. How are you today?”
Me: “Well thanks.”
Caller: “Robyn we’ve had some correspondence from you which I’d like to attend to. Before we can proceed I’ll need to ask you a few security questions.”
Me: "Mmmm..."
08 Jan 10 | Tensions over whaling have reached boiling point in the Southern Ocean, after the Japanese Shonan Maru 2, tasked with protecting the whaling fleet, crashed into the Sea Shepherd’s Ady Gil, ripping the bow off the ‘stealth boat’.
06 Jan 10 | We all know it is important to get a good night’s sleep. We know it because our parents told us so, and their parents told them, and their parents told them…
18 Dec 09 | How are your preparations for Christmas going? Are you one of those people who has all their presents bought (or made) and wrapped by early December, with the cake and pudding cooked and aging in the pantry and the menu planned and ordered?
27 Nov 09 | So, Malcolm Turnbull survives, Kevin Rudd gets his way and Australia will have an emissions trading scheme starting in July 2011.
20 Nov 09 | Last Friday, as a final year ten party and excursion, my year went up to the pool. It was (for the most part) sunny and hot. And windy, but that goes without saying, being Yass.
04 Nov 09 | I was inspired to pick up a my digging fork recently after listening to Michael Mobbs, Sustainability Consultant, speaking on ABC Radio. For weeks, if not months, I had been promising myself some time in the garden, both at the Trib and at home. I enjoy gardening, but with moving house a few months ago, work commitments and four children (one of whom is currently sitting his HSC exams), time for the garden has been well nigh impossible to find.
28 Oct 09 | A sea change could turn into a watery nightmare for people who have pushed the dream to the edge of the coast. Nationwide, more than 700,000 coastal properties with a combined worth of about $150 billion are potentially at risk from rising sea levels.
23 Oct 09 | A ten per cent cut in problem gambling would add $500 million to the economy, according to a report by the Productivity Commission.
09 Oct 09 | There are some inspiring stories surrounding the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games that begin on Saturday.
The Games have attracted a record 28,292 competitors from 95 countries. Our local area will be represented by Murrumbateman man George Cevallos, a 72-year-old, who migrated from Peru in his mid-30s, who will compete in his pet event, the 50 metres butterfly, as well as taking part in the 50 freestyle. (See story in sport section).
11 Sep 09 | I do not know anyone who only works for one hour a week, but if such a person exists, the Australian Bureau of Statistics would count them as employed. So if you work just 2.5 per cent of a 40-hour working week, you are counted as employed.
26 Aug 09 | The ACT has moved to catch up with most of the rest of Australia (except the Northern Territory) to ban the private purchase, possession and usage of fireworks. The decision will no doubt come as a relief to many who have been adversely affected by fireworks over the years, but it is sad to think such measures are necessary.
21 Aug 09 | Imagine you were sick. Nine out of ten doctors diagnose your problem as a particular disease, but one diagnoses something different. The nine prescribe expensive medication which they believe will save your life. The tenth advocates a wait-and-see approach.
19 Aug 09 | It is great to see the young people of the town excelling as they did at the talent quest at Yass High on Thursday night. Regardless of who is announced the winner, young people gain self-confidence after a public performance.
14 Aug 09 |
Connection emerged as one of the key themes of Fr Chris Riley’s address to the large crowd drawn to Memorial Hall by the reputation of the youth advocate.
Connecting with youth, connecting with a community, connecting with family… all these are important if we are to make a difference in the lives of those who are struggling.
12 Aug 09 | Having Fr Chris Riley come to Yass to speak is a real coup for the Community Drug Action Team, but it is also concerning. Concerning because the statistics for Yass show our town has a problem.
