Barry Lowe, a shearer by trade and father, was found dead by a family member at his Marsden Street home last Wednesday.
Police say the 66-year-old had suffered a number of injuries to his head and upper body.
A crime scene was secured and specialist forensic officers examined the scene.
A canvass of the surrounding neighbourhood was also then carried out to determine whether anyone had seen or heard anything.
Boorowa Shire mayor Wendy Tuckerman said the tragedy had saddened the community greatly.
"This is very devastating to our community and it is something very unusual to have happened," she said.
"The fact we are a small, tight-knit community means there are a lot of people who knew him."
Mr Lowe's body has been taken to the Glebe morgue in Sydney for post mortem examination.
The State Crime Command's Homicide Squad will be assisting with inquiries into the circumstances surrounding his death.
