Car show another big crowd-pleaser

More than 9000 visitors enjoyed a terrific line-up of classic vehicles at the Yass Antique Motor Clubs' seventh Celebration of Heritage Motoring on Saturday November 3, as part of the Classic Yass weekend.

The display in Banjo Paterson Park boasted everything from the unique Kieft DeSoto Sports Car, owned by Victoria Morris from Oxfordshire in the UK, to a rare 1918 Sunbeam motorbike, owned by George Keats from Kellyville.

The winners of the Best Vehicle/Costume Combination were Ray Hosking and Lee Jard from Chisholm with their 1933 Dodge pick-up.

Winners of the Best Vintage Fashion on the day were Les and Sandy Gridland from Orange, dressed in the period of their 1920s Austin 7.

The couples really added to the atmosphere of the event in their terrific period outfits and received prizes donated by the Pitstop Bookshop and Label Love Boutique.

Among many show stoppers were the People’s Choice winning Indy Ford Racing Car, owned by David Shannon from Cathcart, a Triumph TR3 entered by Graham Brohan from Dunlop, and the Morris Minor Panel Van entered by Brenden Rutter from Crookwell.

The car display may have been static but this did not stop an increase in the noise level when billy cart announcer, Shelly Wrigley, called "Gentleman… Start your engines!" A real crowd pleaser, the grid of historic racing cars burst into life, just prior to the billy cart finals.

The calibre of the display and the sucess of the Rotary Billy Cart Derby make this a great family day out for both residents and visitors to Yass. What stands this event out for visitors to the town, is the option to stay over for the weekend, and take in all that the Yass Red Cross and YASSarts have to offer in their open gardens and Arts Trail, which highlight the beauty and talents of the Yass Valley.

Car buffs from all over NSW and the ACT, and even a few from Victoria, are coming to Yass to enjoy this great diverse event which is supported by the Chamber of Commerce and Yass Council.

Interest is already building for the 2013 Classic Yass weekend, which will be held again on the first weekend in November.
