Organisers
have labelled Saturday’s Yass Rodeo a big success despite crowd numbers being
down on last year’s event.
Yass
Show Rodeo committee president Gary Scanes said all things considered, the day
went well and those that attended were treated to a top quality show.
“We
were pretty happy with the day,” Scanes told the Tribune.
“The
competition was extremely tough and all the stock performed extremely well too.
We only had one injury as well and that’s a good thing.”
He
said numbers were down but that was possibly due to other events clashing.
“There
was a rodeo on in Wollongong and a bull ride on at the Queanbeyan Show, so that
would probably be why we were a bit down on numbers, but overall we were really
happy with it all.”
Locals
that performed well included Corey Miles, who came second in steer wrestling,
and Clay Bush, who took out the rope and tie event and with it the prized Tim
Darmody Memorial Trophy. Tim’s son Matt was on hand to present the trophy to
Bush.
The
open bull ride was won by Ty Parkinson, steer wrestling by Troy Everson and the
team roping was won by Casey Tribe and Ben Smith.
Stand-out
women were Candice Parkinson, who won the steer undecorating, Jo Farquhar, who
won the lady's barrel, and Nicole Fitzpatrick, who won the lady's breakaway.
Scanes
said being new to the job it was hard work but the position was something he
revelled in. He said he was happy to do it all again.
“I
enjoyed myself organising it and, if they’ll (the committee) have me, I’m happy
to keep going.”
The
committee is now looking towards the Yass Show Rodeo, which is likely to attract
around 40 of the country’s best bull riders.
“We
are a sub-committee of the show and we will have to put the event on. It’s the
150th year of the show so it’s really going to be a big event.”
