The water-skiing competition is a four-race series and Yass is the third leg. There have been two legs at Cowra already and one is also set to take place at Wagga Wagga.
On Sunday morning, from 9am at Hume Park at Lake Burrinjuck, skiers will reach speeds in excess of 160km/h while racing 15 times around a designated course. They will be racing for the Ben Heffernan Memorial Trophy.
Following this, aged races start with a speed restriction of 100km/h set in place. Skiers from as young as 10 will be participating and these will be shorter, sprint laps.
Competitors from Yass, Sydney, Albury, Wagga Wagga, Cowra, Parkes and Canberra are all expected to participate.
Organiser Darren Case is excited to have the event at Hume Park and definitely recommends it as a spectator sport.
“Anyone can come along,” he told the Tribune earlier this week.
“It’s a great event and it’s something Yass hasn’t seen since 1992. To see some of these boats go as fast as they do is great as well. It’s a really good sport to watch.”
Case is also pleased that increased rainfall in recent years means Yass is now able to hold the event.
“There has never been enough water in the Yass area. In the past we have had almost all our races near Cowra. It’s great to be able to move around.”
