As part of the celebrations, Yass Valley mayor Rowena Abbey presented awards to local community groups and businesses that have undertaken activities or works to improve access for people with disability.

The morning also included morning tea and an art exhibition.

Councillor Abbey said according to 2011 Census data, there are over 600 people in Yass Valley who have a disability.

She encouraged everyone to think about the participation barriers that people with disabilities face, including being able to enter buildings or gain access to information and services.

Awards went to:

* Supa IGA for its home delivery program, run in conjunction with Valmar Community Access. The program represents a true partnership between a local business and people with a disability.

* Miller's Pharmacy for providing excellent access to the store through provision of an automatic door with a low gradient ramp and wide aisles.

* Yass High School for its community service program, involving over 30 year 10 students undertaking activities at Valmar Support Service, including building chairs and tables, painting murals and landscaping the garden.

The art exhibition is on display in the foyer of the Yass Library until Friday. All items on display have been created by persons with a disability and include works in ink, paint, collage and creative writing.
