A celebration

Yass High School’s Presentation Night on Tuesday marked the first use of school facilities since the fire that destroyed the practical subjects block three weeks ago.

The school hall was overflowing with family and friends keen to see students receive over 250 awards covering their exceptional academic, sporting, cultural and citizenship achievements over the last year.

Principal Sandra Hiscock commented on the remarkable support the school receives from the community as evidenced by both practical and financial assistance and well wishes received after the fire, and the extensive sponsorship of awards by local community groups, families and businesses, the most she’d seen in a school.

Burrinjuck MP Katrina Hodgkinson and Yass Valley Mayor Rowena Abbey joined community members to present the awards, plaques and trophies.

The evening was augmented by stirring performances from the school band and choir and talented musician, Siobhan McGrath.

Former student guest speakers, Dr Alison Southwell and Tom Pinson, urged students to go on to bigger and better things.

Alison inspired with descriptions of her multiple roles as academic scientist, university lecturer, third-world traveller, farmer, mother, and feminist.

Tom cheerfully described his challenging mathematics studies in his first year at the University of Wollongong.

New school captains Heidi Young and Benjamin Wylie did a great job introducing the guests, speakers and awardees and they were backed by a strong staff team led by Tracey Bills who had worked for months to guarantee the success of the evening.
