From the three or four that started running in July, Yass Runners now boasts almost 50 members, with an average of 20 turning up every Monday.
Along with the Monday run, the club has plans to set up an annual fun run which will accommodate a range of runners. Events suggested are a two, five, 14 and 21 kilometre runs.
While the exact date is yet to be determined, the option of running the event on the Classic Yass weekend has been popular.
Club president Andrew Douglas, who on Monday notched up his 25th run for the club, said it was a joy watching the club grow, seeing more and more people turn up every Monday.
“Running with people is a lot of fun. Meeting new people and at the same time getting a great work out, it’s great.”
Douglas believed an annual fun run has real potential in Yass and hopes it gets as much community support as possible.
“It’s the sort of thing that the community would be silly not to get behind. It promotes good health and fitness and it can also bring a lot of visitors to the town.”
Yass Runners have also begun holding monthly time trials. The time trial is done over five kilometres and people have the choice to be timed or not. A barbecue afterwards has also become popular.
“It’s a good night and if people want it is also a great way to improve their running and check their progress.”
The Yass Runners are now decked out in the right attire, with new shirts recently arriving, and the club will continue to meet every Monday over the Christmas holidays.
“People of all ages are definitely welcome, although there are a couple of younger kids that are seriously fast,” Douglas said.
“But it is really good to see and, of course, the more the merrier.”
