‘Gunning definitely a highlight’
That was the comment of Roger White who visited Gunning on his Sydney-to-Melbourne bike ride to raise awareness of a Bangladeshi water project. While we have been acutely conscious of our district's water quality, in Bangladesh they have arsenic-contaminated water that debilitates and kills. For more information on the project, please visit www.symbiosis-int.org.
Grandma goes camping
This is the title of a self-published book that local newsagent Irene Barerra has created for her grandson Logan, born last July in Sweden. The book is based on her one-day-of-the-year Mollymook holiday at Christmas. Her tent, a Volkswagen campervan look-alike, caused a great stir at the campsite with people taking photos and asking where she got it. Ask for a peek at a copy of the book at the newsagency.
Memories stirred up
The fire along Gundaroo Road has brought back memories of other frightening bushfire events such as the firestorm that culminated in Canberra on January 18 2003.
In recent days, when folk meet up, they recall previous fires where people were hurt and fires could destroy one property yet spare another. In earlier times, before local brigades had CB radios, it was essential that the women stayed home close to the phone, being the vital communication link.
A regular comment was that you looked out for your neighbour, including shooting stock too injured to survive after the fire, to ease the heartbreak of the owner.
The bushfire season, with its dangers, is far from over. Sincere thanks go to all those who are prepared to face these dangers to spare the rest of us. But we should not forget our own part, by making sure that we have prepared our own bushfire survival plan. Do it now.
Can you help out?
On Sunday of the Australia Day weekend, volunteers are needed to look after the travelling public with Driver Reviver at the Mundoonen rest stop in four-hour shifts between 7am and 7pm. Please contact the Gunning Fish River RFS's Mike Coley on 0417 663 045 or michael.coley@bigpond.com.
Seniors housing
A very generous donation of $1500 was made to Gunning Community Care for the Seniors Housing project from Gunning Patchwork Weekend 2012. GPW 2013 is on June 29 and 30. The organisers of this key event on the Gunning calendar are Peta Luck, Maree Roche and Margaret Jenkinson and they make sure that the GPW makes regular donations to the various venues that they use. Well done and thanks!
