Five teams will compete for the time-honoured Triggs Shield (A-grade) up from four last season through the addition of the Harden Hornets. Harden come to Yass after participating for over 60 years in the Cootamundra DCA. Following several meetings with both associations Harden decided to join Yass.
Harden bring to Yass a rich cricket history winning four Merrin Cup (Cootamundra) titles, the latest of those in 2009/10, plus they offer first class facilities at the turf wicket home ground and their players will bolster the Yass representative side.
Other teams competing for the Triggs Shield are premiers for the past five seasons Yass Golf Club, last year’s runner-up Yass Soldiers Club, Bowning and the Pirates.
The Sweeney Cup (B-grade) competition has also risen by one team with the addition of Binalong who will undoubtedly seek to capture the excitement of the townships rugby league premiership.
Other teams competing for the Sweeney Cup are premiers Gundaroo, Bookham, Aussie Horns, Dalton, Yass Golf Club and two sides from Murrumbateman.
The draft draw has been released with the Triggs Shield to commence on Saturday October 12 and the Sweeney Cup on Saturday October 19. Highlight games include new teams Harden hosting Pirates and the replay of the Sweeney Cup grand final between Gundaroo and Bookham.
At the recent AGM, following a successful four year term Adrian Waters did not seek re-election as president. He has been replaced by David O’Brien who will be supported by vice-presidents Tim Clayton and Jim Burleigh, Gavin Kelly has returned as treasurer while the secretary position remains vacant.
After several years of struggling for volunteer support, Yass DCA has stepped in to ensure junior cricket remains viable in Yass. The senior body will assist with initiating this season’s activities but volunteers are still required to ensure the season can go ahead.
