The event is about making sure NSW communities are aware of the risks posed by storms and encouraging people to prepare their homes and families for the upcoming storm season. This is to give the community a heads up that it's time to start undertaking some easy preparation around their homes to ensure they are ready for the increase in intensity of storms during the hotter months of the year.
Storm season officially starts in October.
As part of local Storm Week activities, Yass SES had a window display last week in the former Petite & Belle shopfront. Members of Yass SES, Stacey Downey and Pete Chatwin, were also at the Yass Rotary Farmers Market at the weekend to promote storm safety and awareness.
What are the risks from storms in NSW?
Storms can happen anywhere and at any time so we should always be prepared for the worst of Mother Nature. Severe storms can bring heavy rain, strong winds, hail and flash flooding, causing major damage to homes and businesses
Every year NSW SES volunteers are called out to help people in their local communities. Storm response remains the most significant of operational response for the NSW SES. Last storm season, the NSW SES responded to almost 16,000 calls for help as a result of storm damage across the state.
What can you do to prepare?
By carrying out a few basic tasks around your home you can minimise the risk of damage caused to your property during storms. Some tips include:
* Maintaining the yard and balcony
* Cleaning the gutters
* Trimming dangerous tree branches
* Fixing roof damage
It's also important when planning for the upcoming storm season to make sure you have:
* Checked your insurance cover is adequate
* Prepared an emergency plan
* Prepared an emergency kit
