A week is a long time in football so they say and the Aussie Hotel Yass Roos confirmed this adage when they chalked up an emphatic victory over Harman on Saturday.
The final score was Yass 20.12(132) to Harman 9.7(61) and the Roos never really looked in trouble. It was complete turn-around from the performance against the Goulburn Swans.
Despite missing two key players in Daniel Smith and Jesse Boyle, the Roos played as a team from the outset. They established a nice break even at quarter-time by getting better value for their shots 4.2(26) to 2.4(16).
The Roos kept the pedal to the metal for the whole game and outscored Harman in every quarter.
Players’ Player was Doug Watchorn, who managed seven goals even. Although he was leading out all day he found it difficult to take marks. Daniel Poidevin, Leigh French and Jason Anderson scored three goals each and Mark Holt, Cian Ebert, Brad Porter and Jake Montgomery contributed one each.
Best players on the day were Marc Brooks, Andrew Evans, Henry Paton, Doug Watchorn, Damian Phillipa and Leigh French, and the newcomers to the team all had a good day which contributed to the victory.
Coach Terry Lemon was very pleased with the change and may have found some new positions for some of the new players to the team. It was good to watch the Roos play the team footy we know they are capable of.
Next week the Roos come up against Gungahlin at Amaroo. The game gets underway at 12 noon and the Roos will be keen to notch up another win to get their season moving towards a strong finals showing.
Thanks to the win on the weekend, the Roos are back into the top four. With 12 teams in this year’s competition, it is vital to maintain ladder position early in the season. ADFA and ANU already look like the teams to beat for 2012 and, as it was last year, there are several teams capable of taking the next two spots for the finals. The Roos need to keep focus and emulate this week’s form to give them the best chance to be one of those teams.
Don’t forget the Roos social event on Saturday May 19: a fancy dress/games/trivia night. The costume theme is anything starting with the letter R, O, or S (as in ROOS). Prizes will be offered for best male and female costumes and also for various puzzles, games and trivia rounds conducted during the evening. Everyone is welcome to join in so come along have a fun night out with the Roos. It gets underway at 7:30pm.
I’ll see you at the footy. Go the Roos!
