A team of 10 girls travelled to Charlestown at the weekend to represent Yass in the 13s age group at the State Age Netball Championships.
This competition is one of the largest female sporting events held in the southern hemisphere with 305 teams contesting 2771 games over three days. The girls played seven games on Saturday and Sunday and six on Monday. After a nervous start, where they narrowly lost the first games to what turned out to be the top teams, the girls hit their straps and won their last three games on day one finishing 11th on the table.
Day two started off with two players coming down with the flu and the team was down to eight players. The girls rallied and won six games and drew one, finishing the day eighth on the table.
Day three, and still two players down, the girls went on to win five of their six games and finish fourth overall. The girls all played well, putting in extra effort when the team was depleted. Maddie Brown was nominated as the players’ player for the competition.
The girls would like to thank their coach Helen Bush for her commitment to the team, giving up two evenings a week and many weekends to get the girls ready for the State Age Championships.
The team would like to thank and acknowledge the generous support and sponsorship provided by Millers Pharmacy, Ray White Yass, Franklins Yass and Yass Pharmacy, as well as the Yass Soldiers Club for allowing them to hold fundraising raffles.
Congratulations to the winners of the lucky numbers, the $100 prize was won by Colin Fischer, the $50 prizes were won by Danielle Doyle and Graham Thurlow (who very generously donated his winnings back to the team) and Darcy Bush won the socks.
