There is expected to be a last minute rush of candidates running for Yass Valley Council as the nominations close later today.
The local government election has attracted a broad field of experienced and new candidates for the September 8 polling day. Nominees must be registered by midday today.
Confirmed candidates at the time of press yesterday were: academic and health professional, Dr Kevin Baker, of Yass; company director Rowena Abbey, of Yass; Old Linton Medical Practice manager Professor Ann Daniel, of Bowning; publican Garry Ware, of Bowning, and retiree and former councillor David Cassidy.
Current councillor David Needham has also confirmed his nomination, as has Kim Turner, who is one of five independents running on a group ticket with the Our Yass Valley group.
Others who have publicly announced they are running include Murrumbateman hopeful Greg Butler, and the remainder of the Our Yass Valley group Geoff Frost, Kim Turner, Mike Inkster, Jasmin Jones and Nathan Reynolds-Furry.
Several others have indicated to the Tribune they intend to nominate but have not publicly announced their candidacy.

Goulburn Region returning officer Brenda Hangilias said the ballot paper draw would be held on Wednesday at the Goulburn Region returning office, 104 Clinton Street in Goulburn, starting at 2pm. Goulburn would be drawn first, then Upper Lachlan, then Yass. All are invited to attend.
