With the trial match and round one being called off due to wet weather, the footballers are champing at the bit to play but captain-coach of the first-grade side Gary Lennon was not optimistic when the Tribune talked to him on Thursday morning.
"I talked to Capital Football and they said if it rains for two days [over Thursday and Friday] they'll call it off. So we're looking at missing out on the last three matches including the trial," he said.
"It's terrible, all the boys are itching to get out there and have a game."
Lennon has the task of selecting the first-grade side, which will play in the Division 7 competition. The remaining players will make up the second-grade side, to compete in Division 8.
"Yeah I've picked my first team for this week, it basically came down to who is training well and what I already know about some players," Lennon explained.
"That's the great thing about being in Division 7 and 8. The second-grade will be playing before the first-grade at the same ground in all but one game so I'll be able to watch everyone and it will make my job easier picking a team every week.
"We are also allowed to bring up to three players back from first-grade and push players up to first-grade to make up numbers which is great for a club of our size too."
He isn't particularly worried about numbers at this stage though, with 31 players on the books. The tough part is selecting the core group of first-graders for the season, a task made more challenging by the early wash-outs.
"There is a weekend set aside on July 12 I think to re-play a postponed match but that will be our round one match, so they'll have to move the finals back a week to fit this one in if it gets called off."
No doubt the Redbacks sponsored by the Royal Hotel and Think Technology, will be praying for sun today.
