Past lives recorded
In an evocative exhibition at the Gundaroo Soldiers Memorial Hall, the lives of several settlers, was on display courtesy of the Gundaroo Historical Society. The homes of some, including the Greenwood family - Charlie and Walter, Tom, Jack and Henry had been photographed in the 1970s by Roger Fryer. The homesteads at Bushfield and Glenfield featured.
Cathy Laudenbach's photographic series "Gundaroo Rooms" was also on display together with a variety of artefacts. Society member Helen Willett explained about Gundaroo's two commons and pointed out the Common Roll with its beautiful copperplate handwriting.
We may think of demountable homes as a recent invention. However when district settlers, the Boutcher brothers decided that it was time to retire from their properties, they just brought their houses to Gundaroo village with them.
It is probable that the Gundaroo Historical Society will mount further exhibitions to display various aspects of early village and district life. For further information, please contact Ron Miller 0411 400 897.
Welcoming visitors
Gunning continues to attract a healthy stream of visitors and last week we had a 40 strong coach group from Kiama and Jervis Bay. We have regular motor cycle groups and car clubs with the Dukes Car Club here last weekend. Some local folk had been to a tourism training and familiarisation session organise by Council some years ago and it would be good to get more people available to act as tourism hosts and guides for the various groups.
Jerrawa Show
The Sydney Royal Show may be the culmination of a year's preparation for some competitors but Jerrawa Show must certainly be the beginning of that journey - known as the little Royal. Get on out to the little village and enjoy all that a bush show can offer this Easter Monday.
What's That Again
A local Gunning lady, doing a bit of recreational shopping in Goulburn, was eyeing off a rather lovely top in a Centro shop. It had a scarf wrapped around it and she enquired from the saleslady if the price applied to just the top or was the scarf included. She was rather surprised to get no answer until she realised she had been chatting to a mannequin!
A gentleman seated nearby was killing himself laughing with tears rolling down his cheeks. He later approached the shopper, who was having a restorative coffee to cover her embarrassment and enquired "Are you intending to have a conversation with any more mannequins in the future?"
