The Aussie Hotel Yass Roos season finally got underway last Sunday after the wet weather caused the cancellation of the first scheduled round. The game against Cooma was also rain affected when it had to be played at Yass rather than in Cooma when their ground was closed during the week.

The change of venue did not turn out well for the Cats as Yass recorded an opening win 10-13-73 to 6-12-48. It was a very tight struggle for three quarters with no more than four points between the teams at any break. The Roos were more determined in the last quarter however and managed to restrict Cooma to just one point while adding three goals of their own to seal the win.
Five players made their debut for the Roos and each made a positive contribution. Adam and Jake Forth, John Barratt, Jak Willcox and Nick Burridge will be welcome additions to the ranks of the Yass Roos. The core strength of the Roos shone through as well with regular contributors Daniel Smith, Marc Brooks, Shane Lees, Steve O'Brien and Dave Willersdorf each enjoying good form early in the season.
The only downside from the match was the dislocated shoulder suffered by Simon Goyne in the first quarter which will see him miss several matches. His marking strength and goal kicking will be missed but there are still several strong players yet to make themselves available so hopefully the gap will be more than adequately filled until his return.
Coach Terry Lemon took a while to sort out the structures with the new cattle but the result put a smile on his face. I think the potential of the debutantes as well as the ability of the players that are still to come has Terry quite excited about a strong season for the Yass Roos.
Yass holds sixth spot on the ladder after some very big wins by several teams in the first round. It is way too early to call favourites for the flag but Goulburn recorded a massive win (219 points) over Tuggeranong and have top position with Cootamundra in second.
Easter brings another break for the Roos as the season falters to a start. The Roos next match is another Sunday clash on April 27 at Greenway Oval against Tuggeranong. The Yass boys will be keen to inflict a similar result to that delivered by Goulburn but I am sure the Hawks will be working hard to reverse the trend. The match gets underway at noon.
