Yass High School students Trae Taylor and George Elliots already use the current facility both for fun and as part of their elective sports curriculum at Yass High, and they’re both looking forward to the upgrade.
“The best bit here now is probably the quarter pipe. It’s best because you get heaps of speed and then you’ve got to ‘pump’, bend your knees, then kind of stand up,” George said.
“I’m going to love the new bit. I won’t have to skate down the street anymore I can just come here instead.”
“It’s going to be pretty cool having a few more quarters [pipes] and yeah it’ll be good for the learners,” Trae added.
Yass Mayor Rowena Abbey said she was pleased to see such youthful enthusiasm for the project.
“It’s fantastic to see the youth in our area using the skatepark facility, especially as part of their school curriculum, and of course being excited about the new features soon to come with the upgrade,” she said.
“When the upgrade is complete I’m sure we will see lots of activity around the area as the kids practice and increase their skills and agility. It’s amazing some of the tricks these kids can do!”
The construction will take approximately six weeks, with the skatepark being temporarily closed and fenced off from Tuesday until mid June.
The project is an initiative of the Yass Valley Youth Council and financially supported by the Yass Rotary Club, Yass Valley Council, NSW State Government, Yass Earthmovers, Yass Valley Hire, R&C Pollack Concreting, Concrite and Waters Bros Concreting.
