We’ve seen the stark reality of how society all around the world can become unforgiving to the point of zero tolerance when children’s futures have been destroyed by neglect and self-interest.
Society is now reaching as far back into the past as it can to bring perpetrators of child-abuse to justice.
Not just the perpetrators, but also those who turned a blind eye, covered up to protect themselves or reputations. Those who knew there was a problem but ignored it, those who were repeatedly informed of the dangers but chose denial.
Those who were leaders in positions of trust, who should have fought for the well-being of the next generation, but instead chose to vigorously defend their own interests.
It suggests to me that while Coalition governments may claim they have a mandate to roll back the actions, policies and funding to fight the greatest threat to all future generations, climate change, they need to have a very hard think about it.
Let’s face it, to get a mandate to do something that’s just so spectacularly wrong, you must have done some dastardly marketing to convince the electorate that you were on the side of right.
While the rest of the world is agonisingly slowly realising the need to take action on climate change, the democratically elected government of Australia has been the first to actually about-face and take deliberate and reckless strides in the opposite direction.
Let‘s hope that when the light is shone on this brazen decision to ignore the well-being of future generations in favour of the Coalition’s own interests, we in Oz don’t all get tarred with the same brush.
Yours,
Iain Fyfe
