While Nick Maxwell may have retired, the former Collingwood captain will still have an important role to play with the Magpies for the rest of the season. Upon recently announcing his retirement, Maxwell took developing backman Paul Seedsman aside and said he would still be happy to critique his game.

Maxwell has never been afraid to speak his mind, whether that be with strong praise or constructive criticism on the field or behind closed doors. That's why Seedsman, a rebounding defender, is happy for their partnership to continue.

"I sent him a message saying 'thank you' because he has always been one that I [worked with] pretty closely - he isn't afraid to give me a whack when I need one," Seedsman said.

"He also gave recognition when it was due. We spoke about him being around the club for the rest of the year - he said he was still going to give me feedback.

"He said: My own destiny, whatever I want to become, it's there in front of me. I just have to put the work in. That's what he was saying - just do the work and you will reap the reward - which is exactly what he did through his career."

Maxwell worked feverishly to become a consistent AFL player and his absence will be felt in a Magpies' backline that has struggled for height and even experience this season.

The Magpies' back six against Adelaide on Sunday has been listed as Marley Williams (31 matches), Jack Frost (18), Taylor Adams (41), Lachie Keeffe (34), Heritier Lumumba (194) and Seedsman (34). That's an average of 59 matches, but is slashed to a modest 32 when Lumumba is excluded. Tom Langdon, named on the bench, has 15 matches to his credit in his first season.
