For a small club, Yass was well represented by three of our members. Marlow Meares, was in the winning NSW under 12 team, Hayley DeBritt was in the winning NSW under 21 girls team, and Michael Gorman was in the winning Masters Mixed team (a combination of over 50s men and over 40s women).
Being the oldest player representing NSW, Michael, along with Tom French from Jugiong (who was the youngest) were the NSW flag bearers at the opening ceremony and grand parade.
Michael also won the 'Champion Horse' on 'Bengoran Epeli', and 'Best Horse and Rider' in the Masters competition. Interestingly Michael won the overall 'Best Horse and Rider' at the 1980 Polocrosse Nationals held in Western Australia. It just goes to show polocrosse is the sport for all ages, and apparently you can continue to play well into your old age!
Being selected to represent your state is no mean feat, as is travelling with horses to Darwin while keeping them fit and well for competition. After eight days travelling north, the horses had to perform at the highest level, in Darwin's 30 degree heat, after leaving the Southern Highlands in mid-winter. So the Yass contingent is to be congratulated on a number of fronts but particularly their horsemanship and horse care.
In other highlights for 2014, our president Katie Yeo and club captain Matt Yeo welcomed a new junior boy on June 24, Bailey Ray Yeo. Callum Hughes and Rebecca Carter announced their engagement; our treasurer Jo Bellingen returned to the field after a few years off and now young Ashton is the one who wants to go to polocrosse; and the club welcomed newest member and club physio, Angela Taylor. Thanks for all the panel beating Ange!
The Yass Polocrosse Club AGM for 2014 will be held on Friday September 19 at the Yass Soldiers Club in the boardroom at 8pm. All members are requested to attend.
