The Spiders faced the Vultures for the second time this season and were up for a tough fight with one of the best teams in their age group. Cooper had an excellent game and showed he had the speed when it counted, both he and Johnathan had some excellent runs up to the opposition goal. Jack did some tackling during the match, and Tegan also showed some great speed to the ball. Hamish put in another great effort in goal, and was always in the thick of it during the second half. The Spiders defended with heart, and always kept their heads up. Floyd (captain) showed some great skills in a couple of 1 v 1 encounters and tried hard in goal. Jake was strong in defence with some notable intercepts. Meika contested the ball strongly, and tackled fearlessly. Final score Vultures defeated Yass 12-0.
Under 11s
The under 11 Redbacks took on the Gungahlin Gunners at Harrison playing field and it turned out to be a close and exciting match. The Yass team put in a huge effort against strong opposition. The Redbacks took a early lead when some creative forward play saw a tremendous long range kick by Jacob Garner find the back of the net. Gungahlin then began some good attacking raids but the Redbacks defence was solid with Ben Luck and Zoe Tritschler playing some strong soccer. Yass looked certain to score next with some more good shots at goal by Jake Garner and Cal Morgan but they saved by the Gunners keeper. Hamish Hunter was unlucky not to score when a great pass went across the face of goal. Gungahlin were once again pressing towards goal but Ryan Prins was doing at great job as Goal Keeper to deny them. Yass went to the halftime break with only the 1-0 lead.
The second half continued in a similar vein as the first with strong tough efforts by both teams. Gungahlin were the next to score to level at 1-1. The Redbacks were digging deep and Noa Planten was playing out of her skin and Casey Tritschler was growing in confidence at Fullback. Cal Morgan, Ryan Prins and Jacob Garner were looking dangerous in attack and it was jacob who managed to score his second of the day for the Redbacks to once again take the lead 2-1. Yass were digging deep once again late in the game and unfortunately a deflection off the back of a Gungahlin boot squeezed past the Yass Goal Keeper to level the score at 2-2. In the dying stages of the match the Redbacks weren't giving up and look certain to score again to seal a win but it wasn't to be. Fulltime score was Yass Redbacks 2 to Gungahlin Gunners 2. It was a great display of determined soccer by the under 11 Redbacks team, who had to play the match without any available substitutes players.
Well done team.
Under 18s
The Yass Redbacks under 18s had a disappointing game on many levels on Saturday. They played Belnorth at home and had a 9-0 victory, what seems to be yet another great win in a season where they have won every game. The disappointment began when Belnorth only had seven players arrive to play. The Yass team arrived in full strength, the first time all season having three subs available, and the team was determined to put in a strong performance after the below par effort the week before. The second disappointment was that it took quite a while for the Yass team to break down the outnumbered opposition. The Yass team showed poor ball control, poor passing and too much "ball watching" for long periods during the game. The lack of clinical finishing meant there were far too many scoring opportunities squandered, shots going high or wide. Yass led 3-0 at halftime but with the weight of numbers and possession it should have been much higher than that. In the second half Yass eventually settled into a game where it was clear they had won but were using the opportunity to give some of the players who are usually defenders a chance to score a goal. By the end of the game eight different goal scorers were recorded, but it is difficult to take many positives from the match. Yass need to clear their minds of the game, move on to the final three rounds of the season. They still have the opportunity to end the season having won every game. Next Saturday they travel to Radford, hoping they play better than they did this week. The seven Belnorth players can return home to their club with their heads held high, knowing they played as a committed team, and tell the rest of their teammates that if they had bothered to turn up it is just possible they may have defeated the premiers on their home ground.
