The Aussie/Chinese winemaker and educator touches down in Sydney this week to launch his new TV show The Flying Winemaker, and remind us all that there’s more to wine than the old and new worlds - there’s Asia, too.

McDougall, 31, who has a Queenslander dad and Chinese mum plus a touch of Swedish heritage, was the first person to make wine in Hong Kong, and ever since, he has been on a mission to explore the wine world’s exciting outer limits.

The show, premiering on the Discovery Network’s TLC Channel at 7.30pm this Tuesday, takes him on fascinating travels.

“It follows my adventures though multiple countries and obscure wine regions across Asia,” he says.

These include India, Mongolia, Vietnam and Papua New Guinea, and McDougall finds fascinating discoveries in all. “India was the most exciting in terms of promise,” he says. ‘There are some great, brand new wine regions there.”

And on the home front, McDougall is delighted to report he’s working on a new blend of his own. He and wife Freddie are expecting their first baby in January. Thanks to Mrs McDougall’s Scottish/English/Chinese mix combining with her husband’s eclectic fusion, the little one will have the best of many worlds – new, old and the rest.
