Local Jason Anderson stumbled on the idea by accident earlier this year and has run with it, amassing a host of sponsors and talking to manufacturers of the bubbles.
"With my DJ business I'd actually hired some sumo suits from Canberra and on that same site there were these zorb balls," he said.
"I didn't think too much of it at the time but then on Facebook I saw a youtube clip on this bubble soccer and I thought it could be something fun to do in Yass," he said.
There is already plenty of interest in the community, with Anderson claiming to have nearly filled the 10 teams in the men's division as well as having a number of expressions of interest for the women's and mixed.
"That's because it's unique, everyone that has seen it has said 'oh I'd love to have a go at that'," he explained.
Although a start date of the competition is yet to be confirmed, Anderson said the format of the event is all but guaranteed.
Held on the synthetic field at Berinba school, the competition will run on Monday and Tuesday nights over nine weeks (with everyone playing each other once). It will be held in the spring period between the winter and summer codes (possibly overlapping slightly with cricket).
There will be five players on the field for each team but you can have up to 10 players on the team. The only difference in the rules between regular football and bubble ball is that there are no offsides.
There will be finals and a presentation night at the end of the season.
Melbourne and Sydney has bubble soccer but Anderson says it has not broken into the Canberra market.
"It will be great for Yass to start something Canberra hasn't done yet."
To begin with, Anderson is just going to run adult competitions but if the initiative is successful he will look into a kids version.
"The balls we are getting weigh 15 kilograms so I'll get kids one's next year if we get enough interest."
Anderson is taking registrations on 0427 097 183, with $100 a team up front and then $50 a match.
