"We were all over them," coach Gary Lennon said of the minor semi-final clash with ANU FC.
"But we didn't take our chances, and then mid way through the second half the ball was bouncing around in front of goal and it deflected off one of our players into the back of the net. It's not a good way to go out."
Even after the goal, Lennon was sure his team would at least manage an equaliser.
"There was no doubt the way we were playing we should have at least sent the game into extra time, we had three clear cut chances but lacked that polish in front of goal," he said.
Their main goalsneak Mitch Darmody was out injured and Lennon said they just couldn't turn chances into goals.
"It's been like that all season," Lennon said.
"When Mitch has been out we've struggled to find goals, it's a special person that can score goals and we lacked finishers.
.After winning the Division 7 title last year, the squad was confident of going back-to-back but Lennon said the writing was on the wall a month ago.
"The players are good enough to know that they lost the competition three or four weeks ago, long before ANU on Saturday.
"We had to lay the platform back then and unfortunately we didn't.
"This team could have easily won the competition but we lacked commitment. There were a handful of players that always turned up and others that would pick and choose."
Asked whether he would think about coaching again next year and Lennon was in two minds.
"I'd like to commit for the next few years but I don't think I'll get the response I need," he said.
"I just want to thank our sponsors (Royal Hotel and Think Technology) and the supporters."
The women's Redbacks have finished the regular season in sixth place and will miss the finals, despite a crushing 3-0 win over ANU on Sunday. Yass ended up nine points out of the top four, having won six of their 17 matches.
The Division 8 Redbacks finished in the wooden spoon position after a 3-1 loss to Tuggeranong. Palerang the team that was holding down last spot all year, stepped up in the final round to knock off Belconnen 2-1 and overtake the Redbacks. Yass only managed one win and nine competition points for the year.
