Yass is a long way from the metro music scene but if there is any misconception out there that we’re off the youth music map think again. Opportunities for Youth are cranking up.
Of note is Night in the Lane 5.30–10.30pm on September 13 featuring talented young muso’s. Drop in and see passionate supporter Andrew from Thyme to Taste for all the details. I commend organisers and participants and hope the community comes out in force to support them.
Next is what’s coming on November 29.
Sometimes advocacy is a bit like fishing. A lot of phone calls, letters, emails and applications can go in and you never know what you’re going to catch, if anything. Well, a real whopper this time.
I was truly thrilled for our youth to secure Yass a spot on the Regional Indent Tour.
This will feature an ARIA hit band (soon to be revealed), supported by three local acts in a drug and alcohol free concert for youth which visits five regional NSW towns each year. This year it’s Yass, Cessnock, Kiama, Grafton and Nambucca Heads.
A NSW music project funded through NSW Trade, Investment & Arts, our Yass Valley Youth Councillors and a team of about 20 interested high school students all up are being trained by peak music and promotional industry professionals to put on an industry standard rock concert at Memorial Hall.
The students are developing their skills in budgeting, stage management, lighting, sound, risk assessment and promotions. Undergoing this training is also important for future opportunities. It will allow YVC Youth Council to apply for state government grants in the future through Music NSW to hold future events.
A big thank you to Cathy Campbell at Council for her tireless support of youth. As the Councillor mentoring the Youth Council I feel very privileged but just like a concert there are many more people behind the scenes supporting our youth and I want to thank you all for helping them to shine.
