The aircraft manufacturer has filed a patent for a device that would transport flyers from their steel capsule to a fantasy world of 3D movies, interactive video games, an island paradise or even an African safari. The patent confers upon Airbus the exclusive right to develop the idea.

In characteristic patent-speak, the helmet promises passengers "sensorial isolation with regard to the external environment", meaning you wouldn't know you were on a plane. It could be equipped with "glasses for diffusing images", a microphone and means for "diffusing at least an odorous substance".

On the flight of the future, your fold-up tea tray would become a virtual reality keyboard. Inside the helmet you could simulate playing sport, fighting bad guys or, for the truly committed, flying.

The Airbus patent acknowledges that present forms of in-flight entertainment, including films and meal services, fail to alleviate boredom for many flyers. It also suggests the helmet could provide a more pleasant environment for passengers who are sensitive to stress.

Technology magazine Wired called the idea "horrifying and brilliant". While the helmet would prove a welcome distraction for bored and restless children, the prospect of playing virtual tennis in the aisle could create new challenges for airline staff and the flying public alike. Savvy passengers might simply opt for a virtual upgrade to first class.

But don't expect to see the device on your next international flight. An Airbus spokesperson said the company is taking no action to bring the product to market, beyond protecting its intellectual property.
