The program will include an in class information session covering pedestrian/bicycle safety, helmet safety checks and a bicycle riding session where children can practise basic road rules and bicycle safety.
Each participating school will also complete a road safety collage art project which will be displayed in the Yass Valley Library and on Council’s Facebook and web pages.
“This program is a great example of community education in action,” Ms Weller said.
“We want children to enjoy riding their bikes; we want them to be safe and healthy. This program gives children the opportunity to listen to safety messages and then practise them in the safety of their school environment.”
She describes it as a true joint venture, supported by Transport for NSW, Roads and Maritime Services, Yass Valley Council and local Police. All participating children will receive a NSW Bike Week wristband, drink bottle and an “I’m a Wheely Safe Kid” sticker that can be put on their bike helmet or bike frame.
Sessions will be held from 10am to 11.30 am, Monday to Friday September 15-19 at Bowning, Wee Jasper, Gundaroo and Yass public schools.
