Mike Baird has been true to form. Less than 100 days into his unelected premiership he bullied his MPs into supporting his dream to sell the electricity network: an asset that has been built up over generations to deliver safe, reliable and affordable energy to millions of NSW residents.
We knew the Liberals wanted to sell the poles and wires – but we were disappointed that the NSW Nationals failed to stand up and say no.
Instead the Nationals accepted a half-baked deal that will see Essential Energy remain in public ownership in the short term, while the majority of Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy and Transgrid will be flogged off to the highest bidder – most likely foreign-owned.
Baird says that voters will get a say at the election but he has already appointed advisors to progress the sale. That’s treating the electorate with total contempt.
People, the time has come for all members to step up and fight for our future. We must get active as a collective to ensure every voter knows about Baird’s privatisation plan.
Form a local campaign committee, identify opportunities and get in touch with a central campaign team that will provide you with the support that you need. The union has stopped the wholesale privatisation before, they can do it again. (Source: Live Wire Autumn 2014 Electrical Trades Union Publication)
