It’s interesting how realisations come upon us. One moment you’ll be doing a daily task like brushing your teeth for instance, and suddenly you’ll have a revelation. Or is it just me that feels this way?

I was folding my clothes; not the most interesting or mind boggling task but it takes me ages, because I like everything to be perfect. But I was thinking about regular things then it occurred to me, that it’s sad in the society of today that everyone knows Ariana Grande but if you talk about Mozart or Bach, most people don’t know whom you’re speaking of.
Maybe I’m overthinking things but shouldn’t our society be more academic with so many advances?
I think there’s certain romanticism in the amount of intellectuality shown in ‘Pride and Prejudice’ for instance. I admit that I like generic music like every other teenager but I feel as if the classic musicians like Elton John, or Billy Joel are being hidden by songs about sex, violence, drugs and selfies.
Listening to music from the 80’s or 90’s hardly anyone sang about drugs or selfies. If you disagree on my opinion look on the top 40 charts right now. The context of most songs will be on the size of someone's butt, or what it was like to be in a club that time. In comparison to the context of music of today, older music was about the effects of love on individuals.
In a way those songs are purer as they had to conform to strict regulations of content. But now without oppressive rules and freedom, we squander the musical world.
Though it’s not just the context of music that has changed for the worst, I believe that the actual sound has deteriorated. Where there was once solidified music; pianos or guitars we now have synthesisers and electro beats.
I feel extremely hypocritical as if I’m pushing my values on others without providing a solution, so I suppose I should say what I think good music is. Music is meant to stimulate your brain, create memories and make you empathetic. Good music isn’t the stuff you listen to at clubs, it’s the song that you listen to and you look at that person and you realise you love them. It’s the background of your memories, your first dance or your first performance. It’s essentially the one thing we all share.
