The 153-year-old estate is listed on the Heritage Victoria register and is classified by the National Trust as an architecturally distinctive homestead.

Mount Mitchell, located on the Sunraysia Highway, comprises 310 hectares, with a 100-plus-square bluestone homestead in an Italian conservative classic design.

Selling agent Peter Hawkins, of Pat Rice & Hawkins, said Mount Mitchell was in outstanding condition.

“The vendor over 30 years has made the homestead and its surroundings his labour of love,” Mr Hawkins said. 

“All the historic character has been faithfully recorded and retained, with modern wiring and plumbing installed so that Mount Mitchell presents today as a major opportunity to secure a portion of Victoria’s pastoral and architectural history.” 

The property includes historic stables, two cottages, a four-hectare garden and a tree-lined driveway.

The homestead was designed by Charles Webb, who was also the architect for Melbourne Grammar School and Tasma Terrace in East Melbourne. 

Construction started in 1860 and was finished a year later, with a replica section added in 1910.

It was originally owned by the Robertson family, with only two further owners recorded before the current owner bought the property in 1981.

The land area of 766 acres is let under contract for cropping to a local farmer.

“I am anticipating that the opportunity to purchase Mount Mitchell will be keenly pursued by discerning buyers and I am nominating a sale expectation in excess of $4.5 million.”
