Member for Burrinjuck, Katrina Hodgkinson said the improvements to a 2.9 kilometre section of the road will be carried out by the Yass Valley Council on behalf of the Roads and Maritime Services. They will focus on widening the shoulders and installing safety barriers.
Gundaroo councillor Cecil Burgess said the announcement was a great idea.
“That bit of road is horrible it has been broken up for ages and there are no white marks on the road, you just can’t see anything; especially in a fog," he told the Tribune earlier this week.
Ms Hodgkinson said the safety of road users was behind the decision to grant the funds.
“The work aims to improve safety and reduce crash risk after eight reported crashes occurred on this section of the road in five years to 2011,” she said.
Councillor Cecil Burgess said that it had been a long-awaited project and he was excited that the improvements were finally moving forward.
"The road really needs a widen because there’s all the big Goulburn trucks on there, and a lot of heavy traffic.
"Because it’s an RTA road, not a council road, we really needed the money from the state government,” he said.
Work will begin as soon as possible and will be carried out from Mondays to Saturdays from 7am to 6pm. It is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
In the meantime controllers will guide traffic and a reduced speed limit of 40 km per hour will be in place.
Motorists should allow extra travel time and follow all signs.
