Amongst the many stalls of produce, around the corner from the face painting and opposite the Galloway cattle at the Murrumbateman Field days, Jorge the steer stood patiently, looking fantastic in his freshly washed coat and stared curiously at the large crowd in front of him.

With a turnout of over 100 people and an incredible amount of support from local businesses and community members, the auction for Hamish Bird and his family raised a total of $4790, and $281.55 in donations from buckets circulating during the auction, with a grand total of $5251.55.
Gordon and Jan Matheson from Honeypot farm initiated the fundraiser with the intent of giving something back to the community. With the help of the Murrumbateman Lions Club, the Matheson’s were able to provide support to young Hamish Bird and his family.
Born with epilepsy and developmental delay, Hamish uses a specially-trained canine from Smart Pups Assistance Dogs and the funds raised on Sunday will go to the training and care of the dog.
Media Liaison for the Murrumbateman Lions club, Simon McGrath said that it was a fantastic day with incredible support from the community.
“We had people donating things right up until the last minute. Peoples generosity is just incredible, to watch the way that individuals came through on the day is just inspiring,” Mr McGrath said.
“There were little bits and pieces here and there and the biggest seller on the day was a Kelpie Pup donated by Mark and Sylvia Elliott from Tumbarumba.
“The most inspiring part of the day was when I looked up and saw Hamish in the crowd with his dog and family.”
The Murrumbateman Lions club is excited to make this a yearly addition to the Field Days, providing each year the opportunity for locals to come together and support other locals that need their support.
“We are just so thankful to our community for getting behind us and giving so generously to a fantastic cause,” Mr McGrath said.
