The camp kicked off in Yass, with athletes participating in physiological testing and movement screenings conducted by the academy’s athlete performance specialist Courtney Porter. Porter was assisted by SERAS student interns Vanessa Gaynor, Bethany Taylor, Michelle Moore and Kate Woolfe from the University of Canberra.
Athletes were also prescribed their eight-week strength and conditioning programs to assist with their physical development and to enhance their basic movement patterns throughout their sport. Level 4 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) senior coach, Susan Fulop, then took the athletes through a sprint and agility skills session focusing on movements patterns required throughout touch football.
Sunday saw the athletes in Canberra to undertake a gymnastics session delivered by intermediate bronze gymnastics coach Larissa Sethi, concentrating on general balance, coordination and flexibility skills which the athletes will be able to transfer to their specific discipline as well as assist with their general physical development. Athletes then received a skills coaching session with Level 2 rugby league coach and former Australian touch football representative, Michael Hardgrave. Athletes developed their basic skills, focusing on simplifying and perfecting their attack and defence, and incorporating communication throughout all aspects of their game. Hardgrave then had the athletes participate in a small competition to transfer these skills into match practice.
